Spikenard essential oil is one of the rarest oils in the dōTERRA range, for those who prefer deep, earthy scents to floral ones. It comes from the rhizomes of a small plant in the valerian family that grows in Nepal between 3,000 and 5,000 metres above sea level: as the species is endangered, its harvest is regulated and lasts only two to three weeks a year, which makes it a rare oil.

Its woody, spicy and slightly aged aroma is comforting: one to two diluted drops on the back of the neck or the temples promote calm and relaxation, and it is an oil for meditation. On the skin, it cleanses gently and promotes a clear, radiant complexion; a few drops in your moisturiser help smooth and soften the skin. It also lends itself to an abdominal massage, a warm foot bath, and to nails and cuticles, which it keeps clean. In perfumery, it is a base note that blends with Frankincense, Myrrh, Vetiver or Juniper Berry.

Instructions

Aromatic use: add three to four drops to the diffuser of your choice.

Topical use: always dilute in a carrier oil, 5 drops per 10 ml for massage, 5 drops per 5 ml in the bath, 1 drop per 10 drops as a perfume. For local use only.

Interesting fact

Spikenard was one of the most coveted perfumes of antiquity: the Song of Songs mentions it, and the Gospel of Mark tells how a woman in Bethany broke an alabaster jar of pure nard. Those present valued it at more than three hundred denarii, nearly a year’s wages for a labourer.
