Juniper Berry essential oil is the conifer oil in the dōTERRA range that also has a place in the kitchen. It is not distilled from the needles, like fir or spruce, but from the berries of Juniperus communis, harvested in Albania once they have turned blue: its scent is more spicy than resinous, and it is the one you recognise in gin.
On the skin, it acts as a toner: one drop after your evening cleanser, and the complexion looks more even and more radiant. Rich in α-pinene, it also helps hydrate the skin. Diluted in fractionated coconut oil, it makes a post-workout massage invigorating. Diffused in the evening, alone or with a citrus oil, it freshens the air and creates a soothing, grounding atmosphere. In the kitchen, it lifts sauces and desserts: dip the tip of a toothpick into the bottle, stir, then taste before adding more.

Interesting fact
Juniper “berries” are not berries at all: they are small cones with fleshy, fused scales, like miniature pine cones. They take more than a year to ripen, so the same shrub carries green and blue berries at the same time.
