The two letters GG are the initials of Sherwood Gorbach and Barry Goldin, the American researchers who isolated this strain in 1983. It is the most studied in the world, with several hundred publications to its name. Its code has appeared on labels for forty years.

LR for Lactobacillus rhamnosus, 06 for its rank in the collection where it is lodged. This numbering, ordinary as it looks, is what tells one strain from another: two lines of a single species share neither the same genome nor the same behaviour.

Breve means short, a reference to the stocky outline of this bacterium, more compact than that of its cousins. The B632 strain was isolated from infant flora, an environment where the species is naturally dominant.

The same species as B632, a distinct strain, and the two nearly always travel together in formulas. These cultures are counted in CFU, colony-forming units, that is, the number of bacteria able to multiply once put into culture.

Longum describes its elongated rod shape, visible under the microscope. It is one of the most widespread species in human beings, present from birth through to adulthood. The plain 04 of its code gives its rank of deposit in the original collection.
