Often called the king of essential oils. It is obtained by scoring the bark of trees grown in semi-desert country, then distilling the dried resin that beads from the cut. Its scent combines woody, resinous and faintly citrus notes. Used in ancient Egypt for perfumes and balms, it gives the blend its depth.

Harvested in sustainably managed Hawaiian forests, this tree needs decades before it can be distilled. Its santalols give a creamy, velvety scent with remarkable staying power. It is what gives the blend its depth and its length.

It is known as the immortelle, because its yellow flowers keep their colour once dried. Harvested on the dry ground of the Mediterranean basin, it is among the rarest and costliest oils to produce. Its warm, faintly honeyed scent has been known since ancient Greece.

The best-known oil in the world, and probably the oldest: the Romans already scented their baths with it, which is where its name comes from. Its linalool and linalyl acetate form that soft floral aroma, recognisable at once. It is the heart of every blend it enters.

The resin of a thorny tree from the Horn of Africa, collected drop by drop once the bark has been scored. Its name comes from the Arabic murr, bitter. Its scent is warm, smoky and balsamic, one of the oldest humankind has used.

The queen of essential oils, and by far the costliest: dozens of kilos of petals go into a single bottle, picked by hand before sunrise. Its deep floral scent is a pillar of fine perfumery. A trace is enough to transform a blend.
