Among dōTERRA essential oils, Madagascar Vanilla stands apart: it is an absolute of Vanilla planifolia combined with fractionated coconut oil. The plant is a climbing orchid with yellow and white flowers: it is the flowers that smell, while the pods are odourless when picked. Each flower is pollinated by hand, the vine takes three to four years before it produces, and the pods need a long curing before the aroma emerges.

The pods are then ground and put through a two-stage extraction that draws out the absolute. Its aroma is rich, warm and alluring, and the coconut oil that carries it moisturises and softens the skin. Wear it as a personal fragrance, for special occasions as for every day, add it to your body moisturiser or to a shampoo, or pour a few drops into a warm bath.

It is one of the most sought-after aromas in the world, and one of the most labour-intensive to produce: everything here is still done by hand.

Extract from the pods of Vanilla planifolia

The pods smell of nothing at harvest: it is a long scalding followed by months of drying that brings the vanillin into being. Too fragile for distillation, vanilla goes through extraction instead, hence the term absolute. It softens and extends every other ingredient.
