dōTERRA On Guard: 5 ways to use it at home this autumn

Hello to you! When the evenings turn chilly, home becomes our headquarters again: laundry dries indoors, windows stay closed a little longer and the throw never leaves the sofa. This is when the dōTERRA On Guard blend comes out of the cupboard. Orange, clove, cinnamon: its scent announces the season better than any calendar. In this article, we share five simple ways to use it at home, from the living room to the laundry room, with a recipe or a gesture for each. Shall we take a tour of the house? 🍂

On Guard, a blend of five oils

On Guard isn't a single oil but a blend of five essential oils, each from a different part of the plant: the peel of wild orange, the flower bud of the clove tree, the bark and leaf of the cinnamon tree, and the leaves of eucalyptus and rosemary. Fruit, spice and freshness in a single bottle: on paper, a rather unlikely flatshare. On the nose, they get along perfectly. Orange opens the dance, clove and cinnamon bring the warmth, eucalyptus and rosemary lighten the whole. A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops: enough to last well beyond the first frosts.

Did you know? Legend has it that this kind of spice blend was inspired by the tale of the “four thieves”, European spice merchants of the Middle Ages. It's only a legend, but it's a stubborn one.

Now let's get practical: five simple gestures, room by room.

5 ways to use On Guard at home

1. In the diffuser, for the living room

It's the simplest gesture, and the one that changes the mood of a room the fastest. The warm, spicy scent of On Guard makes the living room welcoming the moment you get home.

“Cosy throw evening” recipe, for about 100 ml of water: 3 drops of On Guard and 2 drops of Wild Orange, which softens the spicy side. Diffuse for 30 minutes to 1 hour, then air the room. The dōTERRA Petal 2.0 Diffuser is perfect for a living space.

2. As a room spray, for the entrance

27 ml dōTERRA On Guard hand mist spray with orange zest and cloves

The entrance is the first room you walk through: it might as well smell good. A homemade spray takes two minutes to make.

Ingredients:

  • 100 ml of water
  • 1 tablespoon of 70% alcohol (it helps the oils mix with the water)
  • 10 drops of On Guard
  • 5 drops of Wild Orange

Steps:

  1. Pour the alcohol into a glass spray bottle, then the essential oils.
  2. Top up with the water and close.
  3. Shake before each use and spray into the air, away from varnished furniture and delicate fabrics.

And for your hands, keep the dōTERRA On Guard Hand Mist by the door: a 27 ml spray, and your hands smell of orange and cinnamon rather than the bus handrail.

3. For cleaning, in the kitchen

The easiest option: dōTERRA On Guard Cleaner Concentrate. A 355 ml bottle to dilute in a spray bottle following the dosage on the label, for worktops, sinks or door handles. Being concentrated, a small amount is enough each time.

Prefer homemade? Mix 250 ml of white vinegar, 250 ml of water and 15 drops of On Guard in a glass spray bottle. Shake, spray, then wipe with a microfibre cloth. Avoid marble and natural stone, which vinegar doesn't agree with. Simple, isn't it?

4. As a diluted massage, after a walk

After a walk in the cold, a hand or foot massage brings a pleasant feeling of warmth. Mix 1 drop of On Guard into a teaspoon (5 ml) of dōTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil, about a 1% dilution, and massage for a few moments.

Even quicker: the dōTERRA On Guard Touch roll-on, already diluted. Say goodbye to the dropper and hello to the roller ball: it does the dosing for you. Apply to the soles of the feet or the inside of the wrists.

5. For laundry, in the laundry room

Wash with dōTERRA On Guard Laundry Detergent, a concentrated formula: the 947 ml bottle lasts for many loads when you follow the dosage on the label. Then, if you use wool dryer balls, add 2 drops of On Guard before starting the dryer. A trusted ally for sheets and throws, which come out with a subtle scent of orange and spice.

Precautions for use

  • On Guard contains cinnamon and clove: never apply it neat to the skin, always dilute it well in a carrier oil.
  • Before first use, do a patch test in the crook of your elbow and wait 24 hours.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, inner ears and mucous membranes. In case of contact, apply a carrier oil and wipe away.
  • On Guard and Wild Orange contain citrus oils, which are photosensitising: avoid sun or UV exposure for 12 hours after applying to the skin.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, sensitive people or anyone under medical supervision: ask a healthcare professional before use.
  • Diffuse in short sessions in a ventilated room, never continuously or in a young child's bedroom. Always leave your pets the option to leave the room.
  • Keep bottles tightly closed, away from heat and out of the reach of children.
