A cousin of Ceylon cinnamon, but distinctly fuller-bodied: its cinnamaldehyde content passes ninety per cent, where its cousin stays below. Hence a clean, warm and peppery aroma, without the other's sugary softness. A trace is enough in a blend.

Eucalyptus trees, sometimes called gum trees, are tall evergreens native to Australia. Their leaves are rich in eucalyptol and alpha-terpineol, the components behind the oil's clear, open aroma. This is the ingredient that gives the whole blend its structure.

The red cedar of the American West, which the peoples of the north-west coast called the tree of life and from which they made their canoes. Its heartwood is what is distilled. Its scent is dry and woody, with a very particular green bitterness.

The same plant as coriander seed, but an entirely different profile: here it is the leaves that are distilled, rich in decenal. Hence that green scent, bright and faintly pungent, the smell of the fresh leaf. It gives the blend its herbaceous bite.

An Australian tree whose leaves break every record for citral, more than ninety per cent, which is more than lemon itself. Aboriginal peoples used it in cooking long before it drew the attention of perfumery. Its lemon aroma is the most intense there is.

A small Asian tree distilled from its berries, barely larger than a peppercorn. Its citral gives a soft lemon scent, somewhere between lemongrass and verbena. It carries the citrus notes of the blend well after they have lifted.

A tall gum tree of northern Australia, with smooth pale bark, whose crushed leaves smell of lemon rather than eucalyptus. Its citronellal sets it clearly apart from the other eucalyptus oils. It brings the blend a citrus freshness where camphor was expected.
