A demanding citrus that yields fine fruit only under a very particular climate, mainly in Calabria. The peel is cold-pressed, never the juice. Its scent, at once bright and floral, is the most delicate of the whole citrus family.

The red cedar of North America, distilled from its deeply coloured heartwood. Rich in cedrol, it gives off a dry, woody scent that recalls a freshly sharpened pencil. It sets the foundation of the blend and holds the floral notes in place.

Its name comes from the Latin clarus, clear: its seeds were once used to cleanse the eye. A tall plant with mauve flowers, it yields an oil rich in linalyl acetate, herbaceous and faintly nutty. It gives the blend structure without hardening its character.

An umbellifer of the Mediterranean rim, distilled from its seeds rather than its bulb. Its anethole gives a sweet, aniseed aroma, very close to liquorice. It brings the blend a round sweetness that contrasts with the floral notes.

It is not the flowers that are distilled but the leaves, whose scent comes as a surprise: frankly rose-like, with a green edge. Long used in perfumery in place of rose, which is far costlier. It gives the blend its floral heart.

The best-known oil in the world, and probably the oldest: the Romans already scented their baths with it, which is where its name comes from. Its linalool and linalyl acetate form that soft floral aroma, recognisable at once. It is the heart of every blend it enters.

A low-growing little plant once nicknamed the physician of plants, because it seemed to benefit its neighbours in the garden. Its angelate esters give a fruity aroma, surprisingly close to ripe apple. It softens the whole without weighing it down.

Its star-shaped yellow flowers, picked by hand early in the morning, have been used in South-East Asian ceremonies for centuries. Rich in benzyl benzoate, its scent is intensely floral, almost heady. It is a signature you recognise the moment the bottle is opened.
