The red cedar of North America, distilled from its deeply coloured heartwood. Rich in cedrol, it gives off a dry, woody scent that recalls a freshly sharpened pencil. It sets the foundation of the blend and holds the floral notes in place.

Cold-pressed from the peel, with no heat and no solvent, which preserves its freshness. Its very high limonene content makes it one of the brightest oils in the range. It opens the blend on a lively note before the spices take over.

Despite the name, these little pink berries do not come from the pepper vine but from a Peruvian tree of the pistachio family. Their scent is softer and fruitier than pepper, with a resinous edge. They bring the blend a light bite, never an aggressive one.

A demanding citrus that yields fine fruit only under a very particular climate, mainly in Calabria. The peel is cold-pressed, never the juice. Its scent, at once bright and floral, is the most delicate of the whole citrus family.

Indian sandalwood, whose ritual use goes back more than four thousand years. The tree must reach some thirty years of age before its heartwood is rich enough to be distilled. Its creamy, milky scent lasts for hours on the skin: the base note par excellence.

Cold-pressed from the peel, never from the juice: it takes some sixty lemons to fill a 15 ml bottle. Its limonene, by far the main component, gives that clean, immediate aroma everyone recognises. It is one of the most widely used oils in the world.

Its white flowers release their scent only at night, which calls for picking before dawn. Too fragile for steam distillation, they go through extraction instead, hence the term absolute. The result is heady, rich, recognisable among all others.

It is not the plant that is distilled but its roots, which reach several metres underground. Hence that deeply earthy scent, smoky, almost woody, with no equivalent elsewhere. It anchors the blend and gives it its most tenacious base note.

The bitter orange tree yields three different oils: neroli from its flowers, bitter orange from its peel, and petitgrain from its leaves and twigs. Its name dates from the days when the small green fruits were distilled. Its scent is fresh, green and faintly floral.
